Hybrid Identities

Focusing on Homi Bhabha's concept of hybrid identity as a 'stairway,' in-between space, I created a sound collage using found sound and created an abstract motion graphic illustrate that sound.

Stairways are where lives intersect, but also where living spaces are separated by doors. My concept is the journey up and down a building’s staircase, passing three flats, separated by an interval of entering the top floor flat. The three flats are represented by three voices, that grow and fade as I move up and down the stairs. Each voice represents a part of my hybrid identity.

I layered sounds found along the stairs which build until the voices begin. The voices are of family members, three people who are separate parts of my identity, forming my own hybrid identity represented by the different languages that they speak. Found sound combines with the voices to depict the journey up and down the staircase, passing three lives that intertwine with my own.

Each layer of sound is represented by a layer of animation. The colours and textures used are those found in my staircase. As the piece ends I reach the bottom of the staircase, and elements combining to create an abstract representation of me, my own hybrid identity.
